National Braille Week

Well done

As a former pupil of Royal Blind School I was delighted to receive notice of your national braille campaign. I use braille daily in my work of text to braille transcription, and am truly grateful for all the help and education I received at RBS. My fear now is that young blind people may not be receiving such input and are growing up illiterate because local authorities won’t fund proper braille teaching or places at schools such as RBS. Over the years, there has been much publicity on integration into mainstream schools, but what I feel is that at RBS blindness was no excuse not to do things, whereas I can’t see how over-protection can be avoided in a mainstream school. I wish the project every success.
